ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude Tell 4 Different Stories About Your Brand — Here's The Data

What 680 million AI citations and 4 of the largest published studies reveal about how each platform actually decides which brands to recommend.

Anthony Johnson9 min readGEO Research

The same brand can get four completely different answers from four AI platforms.

That is not a theory. It is what 680 million citation data points show.

Averi analyzed AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude in early 2026. Only 11% of cited domains appear on more than one platform.

That means 89% of citation sources are unique to a single platform.

Your brand can dominate Perplexity and be invisible on ChatGPT. Same query. Same brand. Completely different answer.

This post breaks down the largest published studies on AI brand visibility. The findings will change how you think about which platform matters most to your brand.

What The Data Comes From

This post does not invent numbers. Every finding pulls from published research.

The largest studies referenced:

  • Averi analyzed 680 million AI citations across the major platforms in early 2026
  • Yext analyzed 6.8 million citations across 1.6 million AI responses
  • SE Ranking analyzed 129,000 domains across 216,524 pages
  • ZipTie.dev mapped citation patterns and source preferences across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Overviews
  • 5WPR published the AI Platform Citation Source Index 2026 synthesizing 6 major studies

Different methodologies. Same conclusion.

AI platforms behave like four different search engines that happen to share a category name.

Finding 1

Only 11% of cited sources overlap across platforms

This is the most important number in the entire research base.

When the same question gets asked to ChatGPT and Perplexity, only 11% of cited domains appear on both platforms.

89% of citation sources are unique to one platform.

A separate study by Profound analyzed 100,000 prompts run across ChatGPT and Perplexity. The overlap rate held at 11%.

Add Google AI Overviews to the comparison and overlap drops further. Just 12% of cited sources match across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI combined.

That has direct implications. Ranking #1 on Google does not predict AI visibility.

Most marketing teams measure visibility on one platform and assume the number applies everywhere. It does not. Optimizing for one platform leaves nearly nine out of ten citation opportunities uncovered.

Finding 2

Each AI platform has a different favorite source type

This is where the data gets specific.

ZipTie.dev's analysis of citation patterns found each platform leans on one source type harder than any other.

PlatformTop Source TypeCitation Share
ChatGPTWikipedia47.9% of top citations
PerplexityReddit46.7% of top citations
Google AI OverviewsYouTube23.3% of top citations
ClaudeBlogs43.8% of top citations

Yext's analysis of 6.8 million citations confirmed the pattern from another angle. Gemini gets 52.15% of its citations from brand-owned websites. ChatGPT gets 48.73% from third-party listings like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and MapQuest.

If your brand has no Wikipedia presence, you struggle on ChatGPT.

If you have no Reddit footprint, you struggle on Perplexity.

If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, you struggle on Gemini.

The fix for each platform is different. That is the whole problem.

Finding 3

Negative reviews on Reddit cut AI citations by up to 40%

This finding changes how brands should think about reputation management.

Reputation X benchmarks from 2025 show that brands with unresolved negative signals on Reddit and Quora experience up to 40% lower citation rates in AI responses.

The mechanism is direct. AI platforms read review sentiment when answering trust questions. One unresolved Reddit thread with high engagement carries weight that 200 positive Google reviews do not balance.

This impact shows up harder on some platforms than others.

A Semrush study from November 2025 placed Reddit as Perplexity's number-one source. Reddit accounts for 4% of all Perplexity citations at an average position of 3.4 — ahead of every other source type.

The 5WPR Citation Source Index 2026 confirms Reddit ranks as the #1 source across every major AI engine. It gets cited at roughly 40% frequency across all LLMs.

The fix is not removing complaints. It is responding professionally to existing ones and balancing the citation pool with positive editorial coverage.

Finding 4

Backlinks predict AI citations more than anything else

SE Ranking's analysis of 129,000 domains across 216,524 pages identified the single strongest predictor of ChatGPT citations.

It was not content quality. It was not FAQ schema. It was referring domains.

The data shows a clear threshold. Citation count climbs as referring domain count climbs:

Referring DomainsAverage ChatGPT CitationsNotes
2,5001.6 – 1.8Baseline citation rate
32,0005.63.5× more likely to be cited
350,000+8.4Highest average citations

The major jump happens at 32,000 backlinks. Sites that cross that line are 3.5x more likely to be cited.

For most brands this is the gap. Building referring domains takes editorial outreach, PR placements, and industry features. It is slower than content production. It produces more durable AI visibility.

One thing the same study found has minimal effect: FAQ schema. Pages with FAQ schema averaged 3.6 citations. Pages without averaged 4.2.

The "add schema and pray" approach does not move the needle. Authority does.

What These Findings Mean Together

Four studies. Different methodologies. Same conclusion.

AI brand visibility is not a content problem first. It is an entity and authority problem first.

The brands AI recommends consistently across all four platforms share three traits:

Trait 1 — Presence on each platform's favorite source type

Wikipedia for ChatGPT. Reddit for Perplexity. Brand-owned content for Gemini. Quality blogs for Claude.

Trait 2 — Active management of review sentiment

Unresolved Reddit threads and Trustpilot complaints cut citations by up to 40%. The winners respond, document fixes, and balance their citation pool.

Trait 3 — Referring domain profile above the 100-domain threshold

The biggest gains start at 32,000. But even crossing 100 referring domains moves visibility meaningfully versus brands below that line.

Most brands have none of these. That is why the same brand gets four different stories from four AI platforms.

The fix is not "more content." The fix is filling the entity gaps each platform's algorithm reads first.

Why This Matters For Your 2026 Strategy

Optimizing for one AI platform leaves 88-89% of citation opportunities uncovered.

Marketing teams have not adjusted.

Only 25.7% of marketers plan to develop content specifically for AI citations. 64% are unsure how to measure AI search success.

The gap between buyer behavior and marketer response is the window.

That 5x conversion advantage compounds. Every brand that ignores AI visibility while competitors track it gives up that conversion edge.

The brands that win 2026 will treat AI visibility as a per-platform discipline — not a single-strategy game.

Run The 4-Platform Audit On Your Own Brand In 5 Minutes

Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude in four tabs. Ask the same question across all four:

Compare the answers across all four platforms.

Look for:

  • Did all four describe you the same way?
  • Did the platforms cite the same sources?
  • Did any platform flag trust concerns?
  • Did any platform fail to identify your brand?

That is your baseline. It tells you exactly where the gaps are before you build a strategy.

The 4-question audit above is the same framework Transovo's Brand Consistency Monitor runs at scale across all four platforms simultaneously.

You get a full 4x4 matrix showing how each platform answers each question. Plus the citation source breakdown. Plus a Brand Repair Score.
